Washing machines are available in two main types - "top loading" and "front loading". The "top loading" design, is the most popular and it places the clothes in a vertically-mounted drum, with agitator in the center of the drum. Clothes are placed in at the top of the machine. The "front loading" design instead mounts the drum horizontally, with loading through a door at the front of the machine. Agitation is supplied by the back-and-forth rotation of the drum.
Tests comparing front-loading and top-loading machines show that, front-loaders wash clothes more thoroughly and consume less water, detergent and energy than top-loaders. Top-loading machines are less expensive than front-loading machines.
